BOC Photographic Competition entries


North East of England orchid society

These are the events for our monthly meetings during 2019.  They will be held on the last Tuesday of the month.

All will meet at Bowburn Community Centre at 7.15pm.

Members will be informed of any other changes through the monthly newsletter or check the website.

JANUARY 29th BOC photographic Competition evening

Chris Barker will take us through the large number of entries and members present will vote for the 10 best photos of the evening on the print layout display

FEBRUARY 26th Bob Cant - How to set up a terrarium

One of our expert and most successful growers is going to enlighten us on this specialized way of growing orhids that need specialist treatment .

March 26th Beth Tilling- Growing Orchids in Windows

Your newsletter writer’s talk on growing orchids in the windows of a terraced house in NE England and how she manages to grow some and kill others.

APRIL 30th Award of Trophies night

A chance to find out how the winners of trophies at our show grow their winning plant.

MAY 28th  George Hall - Roots

George is a long-standing member of our society an a successful grower of many different orchids.  He is talking on how to develp a good root system to ensure healthy green shoots and flowers.

JUNE 25th Jean Barker - Weird and Woderful Slide Show

Another of Jean’s commentary on her excellent orchid collection with stunning photograhs from ~Chris.  Always a good evening.

JULY 30th Robert Cant - preparing mounts for orchids workshop

Robert is an expert at growing orchids artistically mounted with an excellent record in getting them to flower.  A chance to learn his secret in preparing mounts for subsequent successful attachment of a good root system.  It might be worth bringing a plant you want to mount with the mount to get some hands on experience.

AUGUST There is no meeting since so many members are unavailable

SEPTEMBER 24th Sales-Swaps-Problem plants

This is the month that we bring spare plants for sale or swapping and a chance to ask other members what to do with a problem plant that seems sick or hasn’t flowered even though healthy. 10% of money exchanged goes to the society.

OCTOBER 29th  AGM and BOC photographic competition

AGM business as ususal and then we hope a large selection of photographs (max 5 A5 size per member) to be judged as the best 5 for the NEoEOS entries in the BOC competition.

NOVEMBER 27th Peter Walker -Wack’s Wicked Plants

Peter Walker will talk on the habitat, and cultural needs of carnivorous plants which often share the same environment as orchids illustrated with pictures.  He will have both carnivorous and rchids for sale.


Christmas Sharing Supper and Quiz

Always a fun social evening with a quiz , good food brought by members to share, and a free raffle.
